National Orthodontic Health Month

The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing color, and Halloween is right around the corner. But did you know it’s also National Orthodontic Health Month? National Orthodontic Health Month is organized by the American Association of Orthodontists. Created to recognize the dedicated work of orthodontists and dental professionals, National Orthodontic Health Month allows us to raise awareness about the importance of oral hygiene.

With Halloween fast approaching, it’s important that you read through some of these helpful tips to keep your teeth happy and healthy! If you and your children plan on trick-or-treating this year, the AAO recommends avoiding certain ingredients, candies and treats! Anything that seems hard, crunchy, sticky or chewy should be avoided and discouraged if you or your child are currently going through orthodontic treatment.

These foods include but are not limited to:

  •      Caramel
  •      Popcorn
  •      Taffy
  •      Licorice
  •      Bubblegum

While we know that Halloween will be filled with sugary sweets, be sure that you remember to brush and floss after! Too many sweets can lead to cavities and the wrong kind of treats can lead to damaged braces.

Other Halloween safety guidelines:

  • Don’t let children trick-or-treat alone
  • Always carry a flashlight
  • Wear a bright or reflective costume so that fellow trick-or-treaters and drivers can see you
  • Inspect all treats before consumption
